Kinect voice commands make it marginally easier to launch games and apps or to snap secondary functions to the side of the screen without a bunch of button presses and menus. During late night newborn feedings, being able to turn on the system and a Netflix stream using nothing but a voice command-meaning everyone is happy and no babies are put down or juggled-has been a bit of a lifesaver. This means today's potential Xbox One owners are faced with a choice: get a 3D camera and directional microphone array with their system or pocket $100.ĭon't get us wrong, Kinect 2.0 has its uses. Would-be purchasers are no longer forced into spending an extra $100 on a bundled Kinect 2.0 sensor that many see as incidental (no matter how much Microsoft insisted otherwise).

Today we have a fuller picture of the Xbox One and PS4 instead of a quick peek based on a few hectic usage days before "comprehensive" launch reviews. So naturally, our general opinions of the systems evolved as we kept using them over the weeks and months.

In the intervening months, the system software changed through downloadable updates, and the game library grew with dozens of new releases. Those consoles, as they existed on their respective launch days, don't really exist anymore. But given every head to head needs a winner, we gave a slight edge to the Xbox One for its superior game lineup and media features. Back then, we didn't really recommend upgrading to either system immediately.
